TAP Air Portugal Cancellation & Refund Policy: Fare Rules & EU 261 Rights

Understanding TAP Air Portugal's fare rules, cancellation terms, and EU passenger rights ensures you make informed decisions when changing travel plans.

Voluntary Passenger Cancellations

Refundability and itinerary modification rights depend on the fare family selected at booking:

  • Discount, Basic & Classic Fares: Non-refundable if canceled voluntarily by the traveler. If you choose not to travel, the airfare portion is forfeited; however, unused third-party airport taxes and statutory government charges can be claimed back online.
  • Plus Fares: Offer higher flexibility. Flight changes are permitted with no change fee (fare differences apply). Cancellations are permitted subject to a fixed cancellation processing fee.
  • Executive Fares: Business Class Executive tickets allow itinerary modifications (fee + fare difference) and cancellations with a deduction fee.
  • Top Executive Fares: Fully flexible premium tickets allowing changes without change fees and 100% full cash refunds prior to departure.

European Passenger Rights: EU Regulation (EC) No 261/2004

As an airline headquartered in the European Union, TAP Air Portugal is governed by strict EU consumer protection laws:

  • Involuntary Cancellations: If TAP cancels your flight with less than 14 days' notice, you are entitled to choice between full ticket reimbursement or alternative rerouting at the earliest opportunity.
  • Duty of Care: During extended delays (2+ hours depending on flight distance), TAP provides free meals, refreshments, two telephone calls or emails, and hotel accommodation if an overnight stay is necessary.
  • Fixed Compensation: Unless disruptions are caused by extraordinary circumstances (such as severe air traffic control restrictions or adverse weather), compensation between €250 and €600 per passenger applies based on flight distance.

US DOT 24-Hour Cooling-Off Rule

For tickets departing to or from the United States booked at least 7 days (168 hours) before departure, passengers can cancel their booking within 24 hours of purchase for a 100% full cash refund without penalty.
